Soil mats accumulate over time on the large limbs and at the junctures of limbs and trunks. The soils accumulate from hundreds of years of litterfall, and are home to salamanders, spiders, and soil micro-organisms. They also act as sponges, intercepting rainfall, and retaining moisture.
